Nunda Historical Society

The Nunda Historical Society (NHS) was founded in 1983, received its Absolute Charter in 1995, received IRS 501( c) 3 charitable recognition in 1999, and that same year was gifted the former Tunningly/Stamp automobile/RV sales building at 24 Portage Street by Tom and Marjorie Stamp. Grants and donations funded much needed renovations to the building, resulting in a handicapped accessible entrance and restroom, three major exhibit areas for the Society’s Collection, a meeting room, storage space for archives, and work space for volunteers. We also constructed a pavilion used for educational programs for young people, other NHS activities, and storage space. Major accomplishments are the creation of an extensive exit with a timeline telling the "Story of Nunda" and the Rose M. Shave Gallery that showcases the Society's collection of 50 paintings by a most talented 19th Century Nunda artist. The NHS is a completely volunteer organization with no paid staff. Volunteers have been essential to building renovations over the years, maintaining and cataloging our Collection, designing and creating exhibits, providing monthly educational programs for the Nunda community, assisting families with genealogy and property research, authoring books and calendars on local history, and many other Society activities. The Society is currently involved in a major building project that will add an additional archives room, a public research/classroom, upgrade and expand our HVAC system, and increase the energy efficiency and aesthetics of our historical building.
