Mary Kate Brushafer at the age of 11 in 2012 watched a family suffer an unimaginable tragedy; the death of a parent. She wanted to do something to ensure those children were able to experience the joy of Christmas that year. The vision of Santa Hat Society was born. The goal is to provide Christmas gifts to families with minor children, who have suffered the death of a parent or child; who may have an immediate family member battling a serious or terminal illness; or may be a hard working family suffering serious financial difficulties through no fault of their own such as a house fire. Families are identified and anonymously helped by individuals who are called Elves. These Elves work as the go-between in getting the Santa wish lists for each child and in making the delivery of the wrapped gifts prior to Christmas morning. SHS can only help as many families as the bank account will allow. Brushafer stated, “It takes so many elves to make this all happen. I cannot put into words this overwhelming feeling of gratitude I have not just for our elves but for the generous individuals, organizations and businesses that make it possible for us to deliver children’s Christmas wishes every year.“
