The Friends of Mt. Hope Cemetery

The Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery was established in 1980. Its mission is to optimize the cemetery's potential as a cultural resource through the education, preservation, and promotion of the cemetery's unique heritage. The general membership is 500 members strong with 100 active volunteers. Its 15 member Board of Trustees are volunteers who contribute in excess of 5,000 volunteer hours per year. The Friends receive no financial aid from local, state, or federal agencies. The sole source of income is derived from membership dues, donations, income from tours, sales of merchandise and restoration grants. Monies received are utilized for the preservation and repair of gravestones and monuments, the upkeep of common gardens, and the care of historically significant trees. Every year the Friends provide over 100 general public and theme tours as well as special tours for school children, senior citizens, garden clubs and hosts of historically minded and genealogically enthusiastic individuals and organizations. Free genealogical services are provided. A library and archives are maintained as well as on-going research of the large population of permanent and historically significant residents of the cemetery who contributed to the history of Rochester. Donations are tax deductible as allowed for by not-for-profit law
